In this rebus reader, we have a variation on the story of the hare and the tortoise. In this case, Diego and friends have divided into teams and are racing through the rainforest. He teams up with the little armadillo, who is not exactly speedy but has some traits that let him win the race. Instead of climbing the hill, he tunnels through it and when the mud bogs him down, he curls into a ball and rolls his way out of the muck. For a rebus reader there are some pretty difficult animals to recognize and name, so the first reading may definitely need some adult assistance. After kids memorize what the symbols stand for, they will be able to read the book on their own. The final message from Diego is one of the value of teamwork, but it seems to me that the armadillo does all of the work and that Diego just cheers him on. A Pre-Level 1 book in the "Ready-to-Read" series which emphasizes word recognition, repetition, and simple sentences. There is a note to parents and teachers on the inside cover.
