Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
Ben and Zoe Woodward are twins with an exciting undercover job. They work for their uncle in a top-secret organization named WILD that is dedicated to saving endangered animals. For this mission, the twins must go undercover in the jungles of Borneo to investigate the disappearance of an orangutan named Kawan. Kawan usually lives in a rainforest reservation run by Mat, but something has scared him away from his home. Mr. Ostriander owns the palm oil plantation next to the reservation, but is he really as supportive of Mat's efforts as he seems? The plot combines the mystery of Kawan's disappearance and the orangutan reservation's sabotage with high adventure situations like falling from broken platforms, plummeting in a hot air balloon, and being caught in a forest fire, giving the book a range of appeal for young readers. The twins' good-natured teasing also provides humor to the mystery, adventure, and drama. Additionally, there are many conservation and wildlife facts and themes throughout the text, further making the story multi-faceted. While the book is part of the "Wild Rescue" series, it does a good job of explaining the necessary setup so that the title can stand on its own without having read the previous books. Well-done grayscale illustrations, in a style reminiscent of graphic novels in their dynamic artistic perspectives and character-expressive postures, give life to the text. There are also many goodies contained in the back of the book, from a glossary to a fact sheet on orangutans and their endangerment. Appropriate for the classroom, there are also writing prompts and discussion questions included. Altogether, the book has something for everyone and would be a welcome adventure for young readers aged nine to twelve that are interested in environmentalism, wildlife, or adventure.
