Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
For over 16 years, nature photographer Thomas Marent has traveled across the world to record the diverse, complex, and endangered ecosystems of rainforests. Here he offers a breathtaking five continent tour of rainforest plants and trees; reptiles, birds, amphibians, insects, and mammals. Editor's recommendation. This spectacular color pictorial captures up-close images of some of the most beautiful and rarely visited places on earth and includes a 70-minute CD featuring amazing natural sounds of the rainforest.
Library Journal
This gorgeous book is the product of Swiss photographer Marent's passion for exploring rainforests on five continents and over 16 years. His spectacularly beautiful photographs show much about the nature of rainforests and their curious inhabitants, and the accompanying text explains what you are seeing and what it can tell you about these ecosystems. An initial section provides an overview of the various rainforest ecosystems and their characteristics; there is also an appendix describing and mapping the locations of the world's rainforests. Other chapters address specific themes, such as diversity, survival, life cycles, and social relations of rainforest inhabitants. There are many amazing close-ups of insects, reptiles, birds, and other creatures in their natural habitats, as well as fungi and unusual plants. An accompanying CD provides rainforest sounds from various locations. This book Marent's first is not only beautiful but an excellent source of information. It also shows the amazing diversity of species that makes rainforests unique and valuable. Recommended for all types of libraries. Marit Taylor, Univ. of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Ctr. I Also Recommend:

Phenomenal Book, comes with fabulous CD of animal sounds

Breathtaking, colorful, close-up photographs of the rain forest animals, flowers, etc that are of phenomenal quality. Great, factual information throughout the book, along with personal stories from the photographer/author about adventures he encountered while photographing. CD comes with book and has the most intriguing live sounds of animals of the rain forest.......my little dog was fascinated, if not apprehensive, while listening! This book is great for artists to admire, as well as great for research information about the rainforest. You will not be disappointed with this magnificent book.

    great photos

I bought this book as a gift, so I didn't take an in-depth look at it. I was attracted by the size and the beautiful photography.

The friend I gave it to absolutely loves it, so I am happy with it.

    Above average genre book

I bought the book for the CD. Most publishers can spit out a stock photo based eye-candy rainforest book at will so I didn't pay much attention to the pictures. I did look through what I bought and concluded that I can recommend this book because of its layout and unobtrusive excellent annotation. However, while the photography is excellent: the first chapter cons us into believing that the book was indeed shot in the rainforest with excellent rainforest panoramas. In fact my favorite shot in the entire book is the one on page 42-43 showing both the strength and weakness of the rainforest. But the rest of the book tends to be extreme macro work that could have been shot on a studio table-top in New York City for all the visual information it gives. Yea, I know it's difficult to light the background in wide shots in the forest but then one doesn't spend 40 bucks on easy street. The author needs to set aside his 200 mm micro-Nikkor and figure out how to light 55 or 105 mm macro shots. But since the printing of the shots is excellent and the CD is surprisingly good, I can recommend this as THE rainforest picturebook buy.

This book is great. The pictures/details/information is outstanding and would recommend it to anyone who loves he outdoors. I keep it on my coffee table and everyone that comes over opens it and comments how it is such an amazing book.

    Amazing!!

The pictures in this book are beautiful! There are over 300 pages of colorful, detailed photos that show plants, insects, and animal life in the rainforests. It also comes with a CD in the back of the book (I didn't get to look at the CD yet, but the book alone is amazing!)... money well spent if you love wildlife/photography books.
