Rainforests of the World covers everything from the basic biology and chemistry of rainforests and their geographic location to problems, controversies, and solutions. A section highlights people and events like Gifford Pinchot, Lester Brown, Anita Roddick, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and the Kyoto Protocol. The documents provided include the Declaration of Curitiba, the Indigenous People's Declaration, and the North American Free Trade Agreement. The book includes a chronology, charts, tables, and graphs on rainforest destruction; a list of groups working to protect rainforests; an extensive annotated bibliography; and other references.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"This reference is a good starting point, with easy-to-access information . . . an excellent list of resources and a balanced compilation of organizations that make it a handy reference tool." - VOYA

Library Journal
A sourcebook on tropical and temperate rainforest destruction should be ideal for libraries, but children's book author Gay fails to apply intellectual rigor to the content and structure of this book despite the classic reference format. An initial chapter on rainforest biology and deforestation is up-to-date and accurate but superficial. The facts and statistics section is an unfocused assortment of random charts, lists, and documents that can be located in other sources, as can the organizations featured in the environmental directory. The print bibliography is a jumble of trade, technical, juvenile, and regional books with annotations that fail to distinguish among similar titles or to guide research in any way. The nonprint bibliography may be a more ditinctive resource. Other sections include a chronology, glossary, and biographical sketches. The audience for this book is unclear, though the content is slanted somewhat to the general public, and the coverage is too simplistic for serious research. This book has too many problems to be recommended.-- Beth Clewis, Prince William P.L., Va.
Provides general readers with background information about the world's vanishing rain forests, the reasons for the destruction, the effects of deforestation on indigenous plant and animal life and on global climate, and the policies and efforts being taken to stop the clearing. Also lists helpful organizations and print and nonprint resources. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
