Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marla Frenzel
Colorful collages made from paper, fabric and color photocopies of fabric along with the rhyming couplets of the text help the reader appreciate the joys of playing in the rain and snow. The mood is very bright and cheery. Young readers will delight in the two distinct seasons pictured here. The first is rain with its appropriate rain gear, which is soon stripped off in favor of feeling the cool rain against the skin. Next comes a smooth transition from raindrops to snowflakes, leading into the attire and equipment for playing in the snow. The winter scenes depict various childhood pastimes such as making snow angels and catching snowflakes on the tongue. This book will charm the younger set as well as their parents.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1A child's joy at playing outdoors in a summer shower is expressed in short, rhyming couplets that capture his exuberance as he sheds coat, hat, boots, and shirt to enjoy the feel of soft, cool raindrops. The second half of the book celebrates the youngster's delight with a winter snowfall as he bundles up to play outside. Textured collage cut-outs of paper and fabric give a crisp look to the well-designed pages. The bold, bright illustrations and brief text make this a good choice for sharing aloud with groups.Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

Big, exuberant collages lend irresistible appeal to these simple stories in rhyme. A little boy sings of the differing pleasures of rain and snow. "The summer rain patters, the summer rain pours, / But I don't need a slicker when I am outdoors." In the rain, it's delightful to splash in puddles while everyone else is trying to stay dry. Snow brings the frosty pleasures of sledding, snowmen, and catching flakes on your tongue, but the cold makes you bundle up to do so. The fun of it all is captured in the buoyant double-page illustrations. Bright paper cutouts show the boy happily engaged in rain and snow activities. The strong, simple shapes gain texture and sparkle from the clever use of fabric and paint, with results that are visually intriguing but never overwhelming to the young eye. An attractive selection in any kind of weather.
