Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
On a boring, rainy, windy day, two friends are stuck in the house and are beginning to get on Dad's nerves. Then they hide out in the basement and create a fantasy land to take them through the rest of the afternoon. Old chairs, rugs and boxes are transformed into banana trees, tigers and giant snakes. Victor and Joey (a girl) travel from the jungle, where they ride a tiger bareback, to the depths of the sea, where they encounter a seahorse playing solitaire and a friendly whale. Well-orchestrated, energetic drawings keep pace with the overall adventurous mood of the text through careful use of scale and color. The drab contents of a typical basement stand in contrast with the highly colorful imaginary land invented by the children. Camping out in the cellar turns out to be a creative solution to rainy-day doldrums and although this book may be enjoyed anytime on its own merits, it could provide some much needed inspiration on a rainy day. Ages 3-7. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-- Told in verse, this story begins with Joey visiting her friend Victor on wet, foggy day. As requested by Victor's father, they attempt to play quietly (``We raced down the hallway/ And round past the door,/ Up over the couch and then/--Crash--to the floor.'') Less than successful, they flee to the basement where fantasy takes over. In the dim basement, readers are instantly drawn into an adventure that sends the imaginative duo crawling over a tiger's back, sliding down a ``snake's scaly gown,'' and finally into the dark interior of a whale. In a satisfying ending, Victor's mother calls them for supper in the nick of time. The text captures the inventiveness of children's daydreams and is complemented by vivid, almost surrealistic watercolors that spill over their borders, indicating the chaos that typifies the children's play. Readers will enjoy identifying objects that make multiple appearances (a teacup from a picture hanging in the living room reappears in the jungle, house plants become jungle vegetation, and a toy rabbit floats through the ocean in a life preserver). A bit of magic suitable for all kinds of weather. --Pearl Herscovitch, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada

    PRESCHOOL FUN

I stumbled across this creative, funny story years back, read it and was hooked. It has captivated the kids I've been working with for years. They ask for it. I'd recommend it for all kids ages 2-5.
