Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A young girl named Raisin is maturing and living in a world where it seems as though everyone she knows has been kissed. She writes for the school paper and works on a comic strip with her crush, CJ. She lives in a house with her mother, stepfather (whom she dislikes), and stepsister, who makes out with her boyfriend regularly. After moving away from her hometown, Raisin's two best friends, Pia and Claudia, read about her kissing problems, or lack there of, in a blog she posts on the Internet. The two girls help Raisin with her many freak-outs during the story and assure her that one day, she will have the perfect moment. The story unfolds through Raisin's egocentric blog as she focuses on her problems and wants her friends to focus on them too. Since the story revolves around an electronic blog, Pia and Claudia do not learn certain pieces of information immediately. Raisin waits anxiously by her computer for their feedback and their response to her earth-shattering problems and sometimes even gives advice to her two best friends. Raisin's journey is entertaining as well as informative. 2005, Razorbill/Penguin Group, Ages 12 up.
—Lisa Brundrett
VOYA
In this sequel to The Secret Blog of Raisin Rodriguez (Razorbill, 2005/VOYA October 2005), Raisin continues blogging about the events of her seventh grade life. Raisin's dilemma this time is that she is still waiting for her first kiss. The object of her desire is CJ Mullen, a boy who works with her on the school magazine. In her quest for good kissing karma, Raisin seeks advice from friends and her older sister, Samantha, who have romantic experience. Raisin spends much of her time dreaming up perfect first-kiss scenarios. Along the way, she is also tormented by hair emergencies, shaving her legs, and propositions from boys other than CJ. For example, at a bar mitzvah, she is stuck at the kids' table, where a precocious nine-year-old named Meatloaf pesters her for a kiss. When Raisin attends a commitment ceremony for CJ's two dads, a nice boy named Toby is interested in her. She passes up the chance for her first kiss because Raisin can think only of CJ. By the end of the book, Raisin and CJ do get together, but of course, the scene is nothing as she imagined it. Although Raisin's problems and frenzied struggles are typical of girls her age, she just is not very likeable. Raisin is completely self-centered and does things that seem ridiculous, even by junior high standards. Young readers will probably be able to identify with Raisin, although a much better choice would be Alice, the character created by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. VOYA CODES: 2Q 2P M J (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2005, Razorbill/Penguin Putnam, 208p., Ages11 to 15.
—Kim Zach
School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-Recently relocated across the country with her mom and stepfamily, 13-year-old Raisin sends a series of blogs and e-mails to her friends back home. She has never been kissed and desperately wants her first to be with CJ Mullin. The story revolves around her schemes to make it happen. While the novel begins with a fresh voice, the plot starts to drag midpoint and fails to keep readers' interest. Girls looking for laughs about teenage angst written in diary form would be better served by Louise Rennison's "Georgia Nicholson" books or Meg Cabot's "The Princess Diaries" (both HarperCollins).-Angela M. Boccuzzi-Reichert, Merton Williams' Middle School, Hilton, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Raisin's back, funny and delightful and determined to get her first kiss. Still blogging every thought and action for her two best friends across the country, seventh-grader Raisin feels like the only person on earth who hasn't been kissed. Opportunities arise but she declines: She really only wants to kiss sweet CJ, who smells like cinnamon and wraps his violin in a shopping bag. Misconstruing a scene of CJ kissing a girl who may or not have been an underwear model, Raisin dashes out of a room, prompting her peers to decide that she's "freaked out by. . . . [h]uman sexuality." Some are kind about it (though they conceal who is kissing whom); others label her Miss Priss, necessitating Operation Reputation Removal. When CJ's two dads get married, he requests Raisin's help with his speech-could this mean he likes her back? Throughout this life-and-death drama and some nitty-gritty puberty details, Raisin's voice is sparkly and hilarious. (Fiction. 10-13)
