What does it mean to be a man? Moreover, how does a father instill these qualities in his son? By Raising a Modern-Day Knight. Beginning with a biblical perspective of manhood, Robert Lewis shares a unique approach to shaping a boy into a man by equipping him with three essential elements: a vision, a code of conduct, and a cause (Christianity) in which to invest his life. Complete with ceremony ideas to celebrate accomplishments and ingrain them in his mind, this softcover is as insightful as it is practical in raising a boy to be a chivalrous, godly man. VOYA - Richard Gercken
This book is for fathers who want to raise sons to be "real men." The basis is biblical: "As with all other significant issues in life, the Bible holds the key." Lewis believes that society lacks what he calls real men because masculinity has been eroded by the feminist movement. For him, the medieval knight had the best vision of manhood. Knights rejected passivity, accepted responsibility, believed in a transcendent cause, and lived by a code of conduct. They used ceremonies to mark life's milestones. The book abounds in undefined phrases: masculine responsibilities, manly roles, biblical truths, Christian basics. But Lewis eventually offers concrete recommendations: develop a written code of conduct, tie an allowance to chores, create a family crest, read aloud, be active in a local church. His solid knowledge of all the books of the Bible enable him to cite scriptural support for anything he advocates, though his own book often lacks the compassion of his Bible testaments. Even his heartbreaking account of his loneliness in the midst of his father's drinking is vitiated by judgementalism and condescension. Lewis ignores the fact that biblical warfare was rarely chivalrous, and his recommendations give only a token nod to Jesus's most common teaching tactic: responding to individual differences. This is a book for extrovert fathers who want to raise extrovert sons with physical prowess and agility. The jacket shows father/son hands joined on a sword. The lifeplan offered here ignores women, except as objects of male affection. Many parents and others working with youth are no doubt looking for a book with just this orientation. What I describe as limitations will be for them the strength of the book. But it fails even those for whom it is intended. The stylistic naiveté, grammatical errors, clumsy transitions, and repetitiveness pose problems. The book needs more of the backbone it accuses our society of lacking. Illus. Photos. Source Notes.

This book has some amazing truths between it pages and after 36 years in this world, this is the first time a hear them. The book talks about the responsibilities of fathers in society and it focuses on raising sons. I never had a father, so this book was like sent from heaven. I'm trying to learn everything I can in order to guide my son through the difficult paths of life that are ahead of him. Every day in the news (TV, newspaper or magazines) a person can witness the terrible statistics of fathers that abandon their sons and daughters to the mercy of the world. I know this because I am one those sons. I do not understand why a father or a mother would do something like that but it is not up to me to judge or punish them. The only thing that I can say for certain is that becoming a father is the most wonderful thing that can happen to a man. The main point of Raising a Modern-Day Knight is as simple as the "real manhood begins with a decision to reject social and spiritual passivity when nothing is the more comfortable and natural option"(page 54). Also, the bottom line can be summarized in three primary responsibilities: 1. A will to obey (God's will as revealed in the scriptures). 2. A work to do (not just in the work of his job, but also the work in his home, church, and community) 3. A woman to love (his wife) I know and it is obvious that some men are some how wired to be lazy and follow the path of least resistance but it is really important for us to reject passivity at all cost if we want to be successful fathers. The book is an easy read and gives numerous examples of how to lead our sons. The technique used in the book is "ceremonies" to mark the transition points in a man's life and the training/education that each son will need in his path to manhood. One example is a dinner to celebrate high school or college graduation with a presentation of a gift to seal the occasion. The father, with these ceremonies, wants to highlight his son's accomplishments and the love for him. The father is not only a father, but also a mentor and friend who leads by example and demonstrate the ways of manhood. The book also emphasized the connection to other men that can show similar traits, so he can learn not only from his father but also from others. This is really important when a single mother is raising a son, so he is not lost like I was. Once you finish this book you will learn that: 1. A real man rejects passivity. 2. A real man accepts responsibilities. 3. A real man leads courageously. 4. A real man expects the greater reward. The greater reward from our heavenly Father and the greater reward of having a son that can lead their families in a godly manner.

A fun way to mark key points in your sons development. Although I am sure you could use the same ideas for a little girl. The book is definitely written for father and son. This approach helps open conversations with your child. My boy is only 7 but we talk about things like love, courage, and honesty in a real world kind of way. This is not a step by step guide, but a book of ideas on how to reinforce the important lessons your child learns.

Father of three, two sons. This book made me take a hard look at myself and how I live my life. I've been inspired to reach higher and become an example of an authentic man for my sons. Our world desperately needs real men who lead by example. This book has shown me how to do that.

This copy was bought as a present for my brother-in-law, who has a son. It does a great job of thinking through how you want to raise your son, and coming up with rituals to introduce him to being a man.

Dr. Lewis creates an exciting, clear vision for what it means to be an authentic man AND practical ways to pass this onto our sons. While the focus of this book is on sons, it is also a compelling read for all men with children, as it challenges men as a whole to a more noble definition of manhood.

An awesome book. Practical direction and revolutionary ideas that are timeless and life-changing. I have three boys, ages 6, 8 and 12. I want to instill in them a purpose for their manhood. At least one other dad in our local congregation are planning implementation. These are do-able steps!

In this book, the author shares that no one ever told him when he officially became a man or what it meant. He and his friends were inspired to create an experience for their sons, akin to the journey a boy took to become a knight. This book shares their story, examples of what they did, and ways that you could do the same. Wow. What a powerful, life changing moment that really can be so simple. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing your purpose in life and that someone believes in you. If only every young man could have such an experience. Dad's, uncles, grandfathers, pastors, youth pastor's, read this book and be inspired to change a young man's life. To give him direction, a code of conduct, a mission to fight, and a cause to fight for. I'm thankful Robert Lewis and his friends were inspired to guide their sons into men of integrity. I pray all men will be equally inspired. Highly recommended.
