Hope and encouragement for NLD families

This book hits all the key issues related to Nonverbal Learning Disorder. If you've ever had a teacher, school adminstrator or other "professional" tell you NLD is not a real diagnosis, that it doesn't "fit" in their special education categories, that it doesn't require an IEP, that your child is just lazy and obstinate, or that your child will "outgrow" NLD, this book is a must read. It uses sound research, practical advice and the right amount of humor to give parents and family members of someone with NLD hope, encouragement and a little peace of mind. With each chapter, you will chuckle or nod (maybe even tear up) and say to yourself, "Yes, so true." You will see yourself and your child in this book, and you will know you are not alone. Most importantly, when you finish reading it, you will have a renewed confidence in yourself as a parent and in your child's ability to do great things with the right encouragement, education and support.

Great book for parents, family and friends of child with NLD.

There are many facets to NLD, and the author does an outstanding job of covering the spectrum. I enjoyed the style of writing, the book flows well. We will use this as a resource for interested family members and friends who want to learn more about the challenges facing a person with NLD.

I also found many of her recommendations to be both practical and helpful.

Laugh Out Loud Funny Delivery of Some Very Serious Information

Getting an NLD diagnosis for your child can be devastating, and many of the other books on the market are full of "doom and gloom." This text will have you laughing out loud with the author's descriptions of kids just like your own. You'll learn so much from her examples, and it can really help approach your own child's unusual quirks with a lighter heart. About halfway through the book, the author shared a haiku from an NLD parent, lamenting the fact that these kids have an amazing ability to destroy clothing in a way not seen by "neurotypical" kids. My fav'rite T-shirt Worn by NLD son once So many holes - how? I had already been grinning from the text before this poem, but this just sent me into a fit of uncontrollable giggles. The giggles turned to full belly laughs, which then turned into hysterical crying. Not happy crying, but full-on devastated grief crying. It was at that moment that I realized that through the humor, the book had done an excellent job of fully presenting the challenges we had already faced (and would face for a lifetime raising this amazing child). It just took the laughter to bring the stifled emotions to the surface, too, but now that it's out we can move on and laugh together as a united family.
