Reviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: This is a concisely orchestrated, vibrantly illustrated step-by-step approach to microvascular flaps that simplifies extremely complex surgical procedures.
Purpose: The purpose is to stimulate the learning of flap raising techniques in a manner that is safe, simple, reliable, and reproducible.
Audience: The authors have extensive expertise in this field and have developed a teaching tool that will benefit microvascular surgeons who work in oncologic and reconstructive surgery.
Features: This is truly a systematic approach to the surgical manipulation of microvascular flaps of the arm, thigh, back, abdomen, and groin. The authors have chosen to present one standard procedure for each flap. Each of the 10 chapters highlights a unique flap and is organized in a format that details the development of the flap and its indications, anatomy, advantages and disadvantages, preoperative management, intraoperative positioning, and flap design. The flap elevation descriptions are provided in a step-by-step manner and correlated with cadaver dissections that present the method in a visual sense. Photographic and schematic illustrations jump off the page. The final comment section of each chapter enhances the learning experience, and an accompanying DVD brings the book to life.
Assessment: Good things arrive in small packages, as evidenced by this book. Never has microvascular surgery been so clearly presented.
