Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Artist/illustrator Ralph Masiello has written a series of books about learning to draw. The titles include Ralph Masiello's Ancient Egypt Drawing Book, Ralph Masiello's Bug Drawing Book, Ralph Masiello's Dragon Drawing Book and Ralph Masiello's Robot Drawing Book, among others. He is selecting topics that reflect his interests and those of many children. Halloween is the author's favorite holiday because of the creativity, drama, and fright factor. At the beginning of the book, seven or eight-step drawing instructions are color coded to highlight new lines for each step and where they are drawn. On the same page and below these basic instructions are examples of variations in size and style of the same object and other suggested modifications to the drawing. Predicable favorite subjects are pumpkins, bats, ghosts, a black cat, gravestones, graveyard fences, witches, and skeletons. Complex drawings of many of these Halloween themed subjects are presented as inspiration after the basic drawing instructions are provided. For the more advanced artist there is a dancing skeleton and a haunted mansion. These instructions may be up to twenty-five steps in length. This book is not intended for the youngest artists but for those already with basic experience. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
