Ram Jam a Gwaan

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jo-Ann Greene
Ram Jam a Gwaan is an erratic collection of hits and misses, stars and unknowns, singers and DJs, all courtesy of Richard Bell's Star Trail label, with the mixes coming from Penthouse, Black Scorpio, Fatta Marshall, and Barry O'Hare, and most of the riddims laid down by the Firehouse Crew. Beres Hammond hits a "Roadblock" in the dancehall, but that won't put a crimp in the proceedings for long, not with him on-stage over the "Murder She Wrote" riddim. Honorable Apache hits a "roadblock" of a distinctly more vicious kind, and after receiving a battering by the local constabulary, it's no wonder he's shouting "We Want Justice," the strongest DJ track on the set. It was a lyric from "Roadblock" that supplied the set's title, and Hammond returns later in the set with another massive hit, "Come Back Home." Yami Bolo and Courtney Melody, accompanied by Fleshy Ranks, separately take a ride on the same riddim, both are excellent versions, but nothing can unseat Hammond's. And that's part of the problem with this compilation, the bright lights thoroughly overshadow the lesser luminaries. Everything in the vicinity of Garnett Silk's "Jah Jah Is the Ruler," for example, is totally eclipsed by the strength of that song. More sympathetic sequencing was definitely in order. Star-to-be Luciano, still using the moniker Luciana, hints at what's to come, at least lyrically, his vocals have yet to garner their future power. The next track features the sweet as syrup Daniki on the same riddim, illustrating that at least the selector had the sense to sequence identical riddims together. Thus Wickerman and Little Twitch go head to head on a striking version of the "Full Up" riddim, with the former's tough "Rough Scout" taking the prize. The DJs are, sadly, mostly second rankings, so the singers rule this set, with good work also coming from Derrick Lara and the always reliable Everton Blender. All told, it's a mixed bag, no real throwaways, but too much good-enoughs amongst a handful of classics. This is far from the best the label has to offer, with the riddims oft times more interesting than the artists.
