Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
You may find them in multi-level parking garages, at a playground, or outside of buildings. They are ramps or incline planes. People use them to move loads with less force. Learn what ramps are and how they help in numerous ways. The color photographs illustrate the many types of ramps such as a ladder, building entrances, and mountain roads to name a few examples. Although the book provides clear examples and diagrams, hands on activities would provide additional support in understanding the principles of this simple machine, the ramp. The chapters are a few pages long; however, there is sufficient text on each page. Bold print words in the main body of the text are also located in the glossary. Students looking for specific information may find the index helpful. Those students looking for additional information may find the list of resources to be a starting point for their investigation. This book is part of the "Blastoff! Readers: Simple Machines" series which also covers other simple machines like wedges, levers, and wheels and axles. The text is rated as level 4 which indicates more text on the page, variety of sentence structures, and more content vocabulary. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
