All Caliphany wants is to be her own woman. Her father however expects her to follow the path he's laid out for her. He expects her to uphold his "respect and reputation", a familiar universal theme. Add love, death and betrayal and A Ranger's Tale is a page turner. A story you won't want to put down until you learn who betrayed whom. And find the answer to that burning question: can love live again.

I gave this book a four, but it is a very very high four. There were just a few things that stopped me from giving it a full five stars, but I'll get to that later. First, I want to say that this was an awesome book. Fantasy/paranormal romances are one of my favorite genres to read, so I loved Caliphany and her abilities. My favorite part of the book was her romance with Galadin. They have an undeniable attraction from the start, but he's a ranger and she must study at home under her father. The world they lived in was so interesting and at times scary. For the entire book, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The problems I had with A Ranger's Tale was that the middle of the book was a bit slow. The beginning and end were great, but time just sort of dragged by for Caliphany in the middle and so did the story. One other thing is that I felt like Caliphany and Galadin's relationship progressed a bit too fast. I think more time was needed for them to grow in their relationship (like how they act with each other) before diving in head first. Overall A Ranger's Tale was an excellent romance book and I was really sad when it had to end.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Mysti Parker has hit one out of the ballpark with this first story in her new Tallenmere fantasy romance series with its wizards, paladans, elves, trolls, halflings, royalty, a secret agency, a poignant romance, betrayal, a love lost and found. Parker has created a wonderful new world for her authentic characters. I only wanted to smack the heroine once or twice. <grin>
Lady Caliphany, the high elf heroine and the King's niece, as a child accidentally set their barn on fire. Now, almost 100 years later, she is still a hopeless mage in training, still treated like a child by her mother and will never be able to live up to her father's expectations. She chafes at her father's demands, rebels and comes up with a plan soon after meeting Galadin.
Galadin, the elf/human halfling hero, as a child sees his mother beheaded and father burned to death by pirates. Now, 45 years old, he is a ship captain like his father and running his father's business. He is also a ranger. When he saves Caliphany from two brutes on the dock, he has no idea his life will never be the same. He cannot forget her beautiful blue eyes.
This story is told from both Caliphany and Galadin's point of view and later Jayden's point of view as well -- I really like this style.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this world and this story which I read in a single sitting - I couldn't put it down.
Fans of the fantasy and paranormal romance genres should like this as well.
Warning Spoiler Alert!!! This does have a HEA ending.

Book exchanged for an honest review:High elf Caliphany (Cali) Aranea wants different life from the one her father Mage Sirius Aranea has in mind. Caliphany has magic at times quite uncontrolled by her much to her father's dismay. Caliphany wants to see the world around and explore. Down at the docks Caliphany dreams of another life other than the one she has where she's nearly kidnapped but she's rescued by half elf named Galadin Trudeaux. Galadin Trudeaux's past haunts but nothing compared to Caliphany's presence does. Caliphany fails once again with mage testing and disappoints her father again. Caliphany is determined to try something new and sets her sights on ranger skills. Caliphany seeks out Galadin to help her do as she desires. Galadin agrees to teach her what he knows. She has month to learn what she can while her father is away. Caliphany finds that she's falling in love with Galadin. Upon Sirius's return, Caliphany is told she will wed Aelendyl which Caliphany says that she will not do. Her father locks her in the basement not realizing that she has skills he doesn't know about. Caliphany escapes by seeking out Galadin. Jayden Ravenwing of the Leogard Intelligence Organization (L.I.O.) has been secretly in love with Caliphany. King Leopold calls off the search for Caliphany after receiving word that she's alright. Cali marries Galadin and they live a happy life until Cali believes he's been killed. Cali becomes a ranger and L.I.O. officer. Someone is threatening Sirius Aranea's life. Who wants to harm Sirius? What does Aelendyl want? Do ghosts come back to life? Your answers await in A Ranger's Tale.
I loved this high fantasy story! I truly adored Cali's character and spunk. She knew what she wanted and made no bones about it. I truly despised Sirius for all of his coldness and lack of understanding in regards to Cali. This story was cleverly woven together by the author and look forward to read the next installment in this series.

This story has so much magic, excitement, love, thrills and chills, and all with a side of tears, both of joy and of sadness that makes it hard to put down and leaves you wanting more. So much emotion flows into the reader from the pages that you cannot help but to gasp, cry, laugh or whichever other sentiment is being expressed by the author. Cali finally gets what she wants in life and has waited for many years to experience, which is to be truly happy and content in life. In a uniquely compact and bluntly honest writing style, Parker has managed to craft a world, build characters and create palpable emotions in the reader with the plotting. Combining all the elements needed in a good story: a quest, a romance, characters who are unique yet sublimely defined and a series of events that are easy to relate to, this story starts slowly as readers are given the chance to familiarize themselves with the world and the characters. Soon the pacing changes and the scuffles between the two romantic leads as they struggle with their own issues and maneuvering their way through the challenges begin to appear and expose the very human-like challenges their world faces from intolerance, war, greed and violence. A really good start to what is sure to be a series appreciated by many.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Ever played Dungeons and Dragons? This book is straight out of it. High Elves, wood elves, halflings, dwarves, humans, half-elves, its all there. If you don’t like this stuff, don’t read it. It truly read like something out of a D&D campaign, with some romance and heartbreak rolled into it. The author put in enough culture into the world to make it believable, and enough description to make you feel it.
As an old Dungeons and dragons gamer and a fan of fantasy, I really enjoyed reading this book. The sequel to it is on my TBR shelf, after I get read the books I owe other reviews to.

Caliphany stole my heart from the beginning. She's high elf royalty with exceptional magical talents, but she wants to see the world and use her magic for practical rather than academic purposes. Ranger and ship captain Galadin is as handsome as any hero should be, with just enough dark secrets to make him fascinating. This was a fast-paced read with well-developed primary and secondary characters, and the world of Tallenmere is a character in its own right, with descriptions woven subtly throughout the story. I read this several months ago, and then again to refresh my memory just before the sequel, Serenya's Song, came out. It was just as compelling a read the second time!

Ms. Parker takes us into the world of Tallenmore. A world filled with elves, fairies, wizards, trolls, half lings, and so much more. She did a nice job of blending the world of these magical beings, so that it was enjoyable and easy to imagine with a wonderful eye to detail.
We begin with headstrong Caliphany Aranea who wants to escape her controlling father in order to explore the world around her. When she is able to do this she was into ranger Galadin Trudeaux, with both finding themselves instantly attracted to one another. He has to save her from a couple of brutes who attempt to kidnap her only to have their plans foiled by Galadin.
Caliphany has a great take charge attitude that tends to get her into to trouble at times, especially when someone wants her to do something that she doesn’t quite agree with. More often than not this headstrong attitude gets her into trouble.
Gladin, as with most men, doesn’t want to admit that he is attracted to the beautiful, headstrong Caliphany. After all things can’t work out for them, he is of the working class and she is royalty. Despite the fact they are attracted to each other, have the same interests and seem to find they are falling in love with each other.
They each have to deal with the inner turmoil that they are in love, fight the past and secrets of said past. Caliphany doesn’t realize the pressure she puts on Galadin, leaving him feeling that he can’t do anything right or live up to her expectations, which leaves him feeling just a little unworthy of her. I think this comes from living such a sheltered overprotective life.
In defense of Caliphany , Galadin does have a dark past which leaves her leery of him at times, questioning as to whether she is able to trust him or not.
I loved the easy transition between the telling of the story with the different characters. It was written in first person narrative and when jumping from one head to the next it can become confusing. But, Ms. Parker did a good job.
I also felt that Ms. Parker held back a little. It seemed as if she wanted to take you further but held back a little. She would grab a hold of you the reader, reeling you, in only to let you go. Other than that it was a fun romance to read with the magic coming at you from all directions.
Magic and passion is well blended so that the reader isn’t disappointed. I look forward to the next in the series of the world of ‘Tallenmore’.

When Sirius, the arch-mage, loses his only son in battle, his remaining child, Caliphany, is expected to take on the responsibilities and duties of her dead brother and succeed her father as head of the Mage Academy. But Caliphany has other ideas.
A Ranger's Tale follows her adventures as she fights to escape her controlling father and see something of the world.
This is a fast-paced action story with a strong love interest set against the Tolkienesque background of Mysti's fantasy world of Tallenmere.
Mysti employs the unusual device of speaking in the first person from the point of view of three of the major characters - Caliphany herself and her two lovers, Galadin and Jayden - giving the narrative an immediacy which helps maintain the tension throughout.
The issues in this novel - the breaking of parental bonds, dealing with betrayal and guilt, and ultimately the choice between two good men - are timeless, and the resolution is very satisfying.
This is the first in a series of novels set in Tallenmere. The second, Serenya's Song, is due to be published in October and continues with one of the major characters from A Ranger's Tale. Mysti's fans will be waiting with bated breath.
