Description: This is the fourth edition of a book on the treatment of children and adolescents with skeletal injuries.
Purpose: The main purpose is to present the current nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for pediatric skeletal trauma. The authors meet these most worthy objectives.
Audience: The primary audience is orthopedic residents and fellows. Primary care physicians, emergency room physicians, medical students, physician assistants, and therapists are also targeted. Although the authors list medical students first as an audience, the content is too much for present day medical students pursuing careers in other areas. The authors and contributors all work at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The mentor of the group is Dennis R. Wenger, MD, a former orthopedic fellow and later friend of Dr. Mercer Rang (1933-2003) of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Besides being a director of the pediatric orthopedic training program at Rady, Dr. Wenger is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego. He is a superb educator whose opinions are grounded in a vast wealth of clinical and research experience. In the pediatric orthopedic world, his contribution to children's orthopedics is legendary. The other authors, particularly Maya E. Pring, Scott Mubarak, Peter Newman, and Henry Chamber, are highly respected in the pediatric orthopedic community.
Features: This is not a comprehensive, all-inclusive work on children's fractures. Instead, it approaches injuries based mainly on each author's current personal knowledge and preferences. This edition builds on the well-organized third edition, including more input from the sports medicine team. The physical appearance of the chapters is brighter and they are color-coded for tables, figures, and technical tips. Several of Mercer Rang's original drawings and figures appear in this book. One such inclusion, figure 8-13, can be misleading because it depicts the role of the periosteal hinge in supracondylar fracture management. Unlike the bony hinge theory, there is no scientific support for the periosteal hinge theory. Suggested readings are listed at the end of the 20 chapters.
Assessment: This continues to be an outstanding and most relevant textbook. It represents a major contribution from the orthopedic staff at Rady Children's Hospital. It is highly recommended to medical professionals caring for children with skeletal injuries.
