Rankin Family Collectionby The Rankin Family
Sibling harmony act the Rankins fostered a new appreciation for the Celtic culture of their native Cape Breton Island, basing their blend of Celtic, folk, and country music in the dances, reels, and haunting songs of longing for the Scots homeland. This COLLECTION brings the hits: The wanderer's tale of "Roving Gypsy Boy" recalls a familiar highland figure, but the story is framed in modern harmony by Jimmy, Raylene, and Cookie Rankin. Usual fiddler John Morris Rankin's piano accents on this and the other twelve tracks on the disc prove that keyboards do indeed have a place in a Celtic band. Determined to pass on their ancestral language, the Rankins occasionally dip into Gaelic songs; here the haunting harmonies of "Fail Il E." "The North Country" is a driving, hopeful portrait of their homeland, and "Gillis Mountain" is a lively dancing tune that recalls the landscapes of both Nova Scotia and Scotland. The quintet proves that Celtic music can really rock with "You Feel the Same Way Too." The enhanced CD portion of the disc includes video clips, photos, and bios as well.
