From The Critics
If you've been "dissed" by patrons because your music reference collection leans too heavily toward "The New Grove", this annotated bibliography might help you hip-hop back into the mainstream McCoy has annotated 1,070 articles from such magazines as "Billboard", "Melody Maker", "Variety", "People Weekly", "Rolling Stone", "Newsweek", "Village Voice", and "Spin". Entries are arranged by author unless no byline was given; they are then interfiled by title. Each includes a two- or three-sentence summary. Articles covered include pieces on performers, news stories, reviews, and other rap-related items published between 1980 and 1990 The bibliography is followed by a select discography of 76 albums. The criteria for inclusion are the album's impact on the development of rap music or that it won awards, its appearance on "best" lists, or sales. The discography entries discuss the album, hit singles, how it charted, and any awards or controversies. These 250- to 350-word critiques are arranged for consistency by the first word of the group or performer's name. This method is also used in the "Artist and Personality Index," where there are also cross-references from last name to first name. Indexes by date of release, album title, and subject complete the book This bibliography is easy to use and pulls together a number of different sources. It will be useful in libraries that subscribe to many of the periodicals indexed.

Meet the Author

Judy McCoy (M.S., Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas) is Manager, Seminary South Branch, Fort Worth Public Library.
