Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James M Schipper, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is an update of a basic ECG book last published in 2003.
Purpose: As the title indicates, the book describes a method of ECG interpretation meant to increase the reader's accuracy and speed when reviewing ECGs. It enters a crowded field of books aimed to take ECG novices to a point where they can competently interpret most ECGs.
Audience: It is aimed at anyone wanting to improve proficiency in ECG interpretation. It starts at a very basic level but provides information that would be useful to trainees in medicine and cardiology seeking to hone their skills.
Features: The book starts with cardiac physiology and progresses through the various aspects of the ECG. It lays out an 11-step method for systematic analysis of each ECG to ensure that nothing is missed. Each section concisely explains the underlying physiology which causes the ECG abnormality being addressed without discussing vectors or ion currents. The many high quality illustrations are relevant and helpful. There is also a self-assessment quiz that includes answers with explanations.
Assessment: This book provides a method for systematic interpretation of ECG suitable for beginning ECG readers. This third edition includes a chapter on cardiac physiology and a self-assessment quiz, both useful additions. ECG interpretation is a crowded area in medical publishing and while this book doesn't contain anything revolutionary, it remains a solid choice.
