Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This U.K. book uses a bulleted format to present the essentials of internal medicine. The previous version was published in 2003.
Purpose: The preface outlines the authors' goal to provide a book encompassing core medical conditions in an easily accessible format. This the authors have done well. They focus on presenting symptoms rather than discussing a confirmed diagnosis, which makes this book particularly useful.
Audience: The audience is primarily those in medical training, but I found the book useful as a quick reference of essential facts.
Features: Using a traditional organization, the book is divided by organ systems followed by specific diagnoses. For each diagnosis, bulleted statements cover definition, etiology, typical historical presentations, findings on physical examination, how the diagnosis is made, first-line management, and, finally, common complications. With this format, the authors do assume a certain level of medical knowledge and there are no references.
Assessment: As the title implies, this is a useful reference as a memory jogger. It lays out the basics that every person in medical training must keep in mind. I highly recommend this as a desk reference for primary care clinicians.
From the Publisher

“This concise, no-nonsense reference is presented in an A-Z format for easy access to information, and includes a thematic index with conditions sorted by speciality making it an ideal companion in any clinical situation.” (Kingbook73's Medical Ebook and Video Collection, 15 September 2014)

"As the title implies, this is a useful reference as a memory jogger. It lays out the basics that every person in medical training must keep in mind. I highly recommend this as a desk reference for primary care clinicians." (Doody's, 26 August 2011)

"This book is just fantastic. While doing specialist rotations in my fourth year, I've found it more useful, in some ways, than the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine, a book that we use on a daily basis in the hospital." (Times Higher Education, 24 February 2011)
