Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Audrey Rene Deeken, B.A.(University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: This review book presents detailed information on the currently understood pathology of disease. While covering a wide variety of topics, the book manages to effectively describe each disease and its pathological basis.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe the pathological basis, management, and diagnostic testing of disease. The objectives are met well with the inclusion of a new chapter on diagnostic testing and more tables to summarize concepts.
Audience: This book is targeted for medical students preparing for the USMLE Steps 1 and 2
Features: The book addresses disease using a systems-based approach. It begins with the basics of cell injury, inflammation, and repair, and progresses through organ systems in a systematic fashion. The chapter on diagnostic testing is particularly helpful for giving students an appreciation of various testing methods used in medicine. The images vary from histopathology images to clinical photos, and are of good quality.
Assessment: This is an excellent update to a strong pathology review book. It includes current information and offers deeper explanations for students interested in further diagnostic options.
From the Publisher

"Each chapter is packed with information. As well as the bullet-point formatted text, the authors frequently use non-fussy, two-tone tables to provide more in-depth information on single topics...In conclusion, this book is a 'high-yield', 'rapid review' of pathologypacked with information in a well-presented, concise format. I would recommend it to final year students or junior doctors as a revision tool." The Bulletin, October 2010, Review of the 2nd edition

    I Also Recommend:

Everything I need to learn for my boards I learn it from this book. Rapid Review Pathology by Edward Goljan.

This book is a must-have for USMLE Step 1. It presents the most helpful illustrations, photos, diagrams, and tables which are very valuable in recalling certain topics. The book also comes with a searchable full text online where I can store specific notes and images which I stored as future references. The summarized notes on the side of the texts are very beneficial for rapid understanding of the discussed concepts. It's very comprehensive and concise which makes learning all the more easy.

    I Also Recommend:

Main text and Premier USMLE TOOL (But only with audio lectures)

You use Robbins text if you have nothing else, or you could use this book along with the audio recordings of his lectures (floating around on the web) and the transcripts of that audio as a comprehensive pathology learning tool.

This book does a bang up job of INTEGRATING different subjects with pathology and amongst themselves. That's why its so important. His lectures stress mechanisms not rote memorization.
Using GOLJAN alone is a little rough since it is in outline format, but in my humble opinion if you go ahead and use this book with his lectures you are learning all the relevant pathology not just for the USMLE but for you medical career.

I constantly quote this guy in class for my med school presentation and people are wow'd at the amount of stuff I know without really applying that much time... I strive to get the most from spending the least amount of time and this is honestly one of those tools.
I will read the RR PATH and the BRS path several times each, and I dare anyone to challenge me on disease processes.
