Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rosa Roberts
Is a cabbage worth trading for your first-born daughter? In this classic tale, this is what happens when the husband decides to please his wife and steal from the witch's garden next door. The daughter born is named Rapunzel, and she becomes a beautiful maiden. To the displeasure of the witch, she confines her to a tower as a prisoner. The witch uses Rapunzel's long mane to climb the tower to see her. In the meantime, a prince has observed the activity and is enamored with Rapunzel's beauty, so he asks for her hand in marriage. The witch finds out about the plan, cuts Rapunzel's hair, and banishes her to the desert. The witch tricks the handsome prince by using Rapunzel's mane, then flings him off the tower where he loses his sight but is able to find the beautiful maiden after several years by recognizing her singing voice. This selection is from the "Read-it Readers" green level, which presents more complex ideas, varied vocabulary, and complex sentence structure. The illustrations are simple and vibrant for readers.
