Overview

She didn’t hatch out of an eagle’s nest, circa One Million Years B.C., clad in a skimpy fur bikini. She didn’t aspire to fame as a sex symbol. Yet, for many years after making her Hollywood entrance as every man’s fantasy, Raquel Welch was best known for her beauty and sex appeal. A private person, she allowed people to draw their own conclusions from her public image. Now, Raquel Welch is ready to speak her mind. And, with the luxury of hindsight and the benefit of experience, she has plenty to share about the art of being a woman—even men will find it enlightening to read about what makes her tick.

In Beyond the Cleavage, Raquel Welch talks, woman to woman, about her views on all that comes with being a member of the female sex—love, sex, style, health, body image, career, family, forgiveness, aging, and coming of age. Looking back on her life, she lets women in on her childhood, dominated by a volatile father; her first love, marriage, and divorce; her early struggles as a single working mother in Hollywood; her battles for roles and respect as an actress; and her daring decision never to lie about her age. Looking forward, she offers women a compass to guide them at every crossroad of life, from menopause through the empty nest years, to dating younger men and beyond. Along with bringing baby boomers into her confidence—she offers essential tips for staying motivated and positive past fifty, as well as divulging her secrets for fabulous hair and makeup—she even talks to today’s younger generation of women about the importance of carrying themselves with dignity and self-respect.

With warmth, humor, conviction, and honesty, Raquel reveals her approach to preventative aging, her life-changing commitment to yoga, her recipe for eating right, her skincare regimen, her flair for fashion, and much more. Deeply personal (Welch wrote every word herself—no ghostwriter), Beyond the Cleavage is Raquel Welch’s gift to every woman who longs to look and feel her best, and be at peace with herself.

WOW! An articulate sex symbol with brains! What will the world come to!

In her book Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage, she shows insightful thoughts, good logic, and a brain which has continued to develop. The beginning chapters on her early life and synopsis of her career were extremely interesting. The insights into her father, and her family's influences on her development and mental attitudes that she displayed throughout her life, were revealing and thought provoking. The mid chapters with her philosophy of life were a bit general and did not do much to enlighten this reader. Her chapters on style, fashion, hair, makeup, etc., were interesting and certainly well developed. The only downside is that in using her personal experiences, she gives advice which will probably not apply to all readers since there is so much variation among women. Not many can afford the dresses she prefers, the makeup she likes to use, the professional help she can hire, or the trips she can take for rest, relaxation, and beauty. Her last section on moving on was artfully and honestly handled. Her open discussion of uncertainties, change, and coping with life's unexpected surprises, was very uplifting.
This book is worth reading to gain insight into a sex symbol's likes, thinking, and attitude toward life as an aging Boomer. Bravo to Raquel Welch for having the courage to tackle something like this and being so straight forward and honest.

    Ok read

The beginning was interesting to a point. The book seemed to drag on for me. As another reader stated this book is more about Raquel's beauty regime, ageing, women's issues... If this is what you are looking for this book is for you.

I still admire Raquel's beauty at the age of almost 70. Kudoes to her!

    What a waste of money!

I am sorry but this is by no means a memior! It is more like a How to beautiful like me book. Entire chapters about how to apply your makeup, really? How to dress, how to wear your hair, Where is the insight into the woman behind the facade? Or is that all there is justa facade?

    Getting to Know Raquel

If you're looking for a kiss and tell, this is not it.

This book is Raquel leaving her legacy. She tells us who she is, and explains her philosophy about life and what it means to be a woman.

Her tone is very warm, almost conversational. The book is loaded with surprisingly useful advice and counsel that covers a broad range of topics of interest to most women. Raquel hopes that her readers will benefit from her experience, while understanding that many young women will not realize that it applies to them.

She relates some amusing anecdotes in order to illustrate her points.
This book was an easy read. I did not want to put it down and I finished it over a weekend.

    NOT WORTH YOUR TIME

In a word: BORING!!! Tooooooo wordy! For example: she goes on and on about doing Yoga. OMG! I think she's trying to relate to the avg woman, but she's far from it. The only interesting part is in the later part of the book. In ONE paragraph she talks about former interest/co-workers such as Elvis, Frank Sinatra, etc.
