Overview

With a serious demeanor and crystalline voice, Joan Baez has an image as the classic protest singer. It's small wonder she's been called the conscience of her generation. This retrospective box set reveals not only the dedicated artist and activist but also Baez the sister, daughter, lover, mother, friend, and -- surprise! -- humorist (there's that Dylan imitation, for one thing...and be sure to read the liner notes, too). There are true rarities here: "Scarlet Ribbons" from a bootleg album recorded when Baez was 17, previously unreleased duets with Bill Wood from her days as a teenager around Harvard Square, and two tracks recorded with the Grateful Dead. The live tracks abound as well, among them previously unreleased performances with Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Mimi Farina, and Odetta. The project is woven together by a thoughtful selection of classics from Baez's recorded work, including the really classic "Silver Dagger" from her first Vanguard record, her one country radio hit, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," and the title track from her almost forgotten Spanish language release, "Gracias a la Vida." If you're even a marginal Baez fan, you'll want this disc. If you've never quite understood what all the fuss was about, RARE, LIVE, & CLASSIC is an excellent place to find out.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Spanning three discs, the box set Rare, Live & Classic is an odd mix of Joan Baez's best-known songs and rarities. For the hardcore collector, there are plenty of interesting items here, including previously unreleased duets with Bob Dylan, Donovan, Bill Wood, and Jeffrey Shurtleff, but for the casual fan, there's too much material; they would be better off with her original albums or single-disc compilations.
