Overview

“Rat, I am ready to ROCK!"
"Huh?"
"You said I could sing in the band."
"When?"
"In the last book."
"Oh. Right."

Rat has finally agreed to let his friend Roach sing in his band... but not if Roach makes everyone wear shiny, sparkly outfits. No way! Roach can still sing, though, right?
Wrong. He can't even get out a squeak!

Just when Rat is at his tail’s end, he realizes that one thing might bring the sparkle and shine back to Roach's voice. Rat may look a little funny in his glitzy new outfit, but sometimes friendship is totally worth it.

With just the right touch of silly and sweet, Rat and Roach Rock On! gets at the heart of friendship and makes us laugh along the way.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
Rat and Roach are supposed to be best friends, so when Rat invites Roach to sing with his rat band, Roach jumps at the chance. Roach is so excited he buys sparkly suits for himself and his band mates. The rats in the band do not want to wear the costumes, but rather than go with a majority rules decision, Rat challenges Roach to a staring contest. If Roach wins, they all wear the costumes. If Rat wins, the costumes are tossed. Roach blinks first, but on the night of the performance he refuses to sing, saying he has lost his sparkle. In the end Rat gives in and they all wear the costumes, despite the discomfort of the rats. The moral of the story appears to be: If you whine enough and make it unpleasant for others, you will eventually get your way. There are a couple of funny moments in the book, such as the audience made of cats (Won't they chase the rats?) and the string of trashy offerings in Rat's attempt to bribe Roach onto the stage. The story over all falls flat in both text and illustrations. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
School Library Journal
K-Gr 1—In this sequel to Rat and Roach Friends to the End (Viking, 2012), Covell demonstrates the value of compromise. The junkyard band successfully overrules Roach's proposed pink-and-green-starred costumes since the clothes don't mesh with their urban style. At the Big City Jam, Roach gets stage fright: "I can't sing! My sparkle's gone." Good friend Rat's solution is to bring back the Elvis-style attire, boosting Roach's confidence and resulting in a rousing success for the group. Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Covell also claims to employ "assorted smudges and scraps from Dumpster dives." He maintains minimal compositions in the textured, earth-toned backgrounds and compelling details like a tuna-can drum set. The cat audience with glowing green eyes and Rat's offer of "trashy treats" like a mushy banana or a pair of lucky underwear keep the humor going.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
Kirkus Reviews
Opposites may attract, but readers will remain uncharmed by this dry picture-book sequel. Rat has allowed his best friend, Roach, to be the lead singer for his band, and the finicky insect could not be happier. Fashioning outfits worthy of Elvis' late period, Roach is astounded when he discovers that the down-and-dirty crew doesn't want to touch the fancy duds. Off they go to a hot gig, but Roach can't sing a note. It's only when the entire band concedes and gives him what he wants that they are able to rock the joint. The apparent message to be drawn is that while it's a bad thing to force one person to abandon their sparkle and shine, it is perfectly A-OK to make three people cave in to that one crybaby's demands. As with his previous book, Rat and Roach (2012), Covell is strongest when drawing episodes of manic energy. The book's digital gymnastics evoke the splatter, smells and feel of the filthy pavements. While the writing lags, the gritty gleam of the city streets goes for broke. Since it isn't either funny or gross enough to truly succeed, place this one only where the previous title has already proved popular. (Picture book. 4-7)
