Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
Young animal lovers with an interest in rats as pets will enjoy this installment in the "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" series. Beginning with the differences between tame rats and wild rats, readers learn basic facts about these creatures. The authors discuss the different breeds of pet rats, including tailless and hairless rats, and the many important considerations for those looking to adopt a rat. Prospective rat owners are encouraged to keep multiple rats because of their social nature, but are cautioned against keeping male and female rats that have not been ?fixed.' Young readers also learn more general tips for rat care and the details of their specialized needs as pets including a comparison of different types of cages, critical considerations when rat-proofing a home and a rat's dietary needs. In addition, the authors discuss rat intelligence and promote playing with and training pet rats. The emphasis throughout is on responsible pet ownership, and the importance of regular handling and interaction with pet rats in order to keep them socialized and friendly. An abundance of large color photographs illustrate the variety in size and coloring, and effectively support the text. However, the addition of three digital illustrations depicting grinning cartoon rats does little to support the factual information and feels out of place next to the realism of the photographs. Colorful text boxes highlight a variety of additional topics such as how rats use their tails for balance. Lots of white space, brightly colored borders and headings, and a conversational tone make this an accessible and inviting option for reluctant readers. At the same time, the comprehensive information presented will be useful for those writing reports. Overall, this title is a good option for public and school libraries needing titles on both rats as pets, and rat habits and characteristics in general. Includes vocabulary list, additional resources, and an index. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith

    A review for this book

This book is a nice approach to caring for our rattie friends. It was a little thin when I got it at the library, but if your child wants to get rats....this is a simple book for children that promotes rats as pets in a positive manner. I didnt like how they describe them as unusual though - lots of people own them and they are almost as popular as our fellow cat or dog. Adults may find it rather short and childish, but the book is great for kids. It doesnt have loads of information, but its a nice start and its a must buy for young rattie owners. My daughters two rats benefit from this book well!!

She is probably nervous about something. Ask her about it and that you noticed she had been acting differently
