Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather L. Montgomery
The graphic, full-page photos in this book are sure to entice anyone who is not squeamish about snakes. Markle's clear expository text effectively covers broad concepts such as food chains as well as the details such as how a rattlesnake's scent-sensitive tongue works. Other topics covered include: advantages of forward-facing eyes, tracking prey, mechanism of envenomation, ability to consume large prey, digestion, use of the rattle, defensive techniques, temperature regulation, reproduction, birth and growth. Although the structure of the text is not overly pronounced, careful pairing of the text and photos allows for either a dip-in or a straight-through reading style. Photos and text references allude to various species of rattlesnakes found in North and South America. At the end, four Looking Back activities are included to encourage careful scrutiny of the photos. A succinct glossary, list of books and websites, as well as an index complete the backmatter. This book is part of "Animal Predators," an ongoing series. Reviewer: Heather L. Montgomery
