Overview

The war against BioZenith is on.

In the weeks since she first came into her mysterious new superpowers, Emily has watched one of her packmates disappear through an interdimensional portal; she's been hunted by creepy, body-snatching shadowmen; she's managed to form an alliance with the same telekinetic cheerleaders who once tried to take her down; and she's even discovered that her believed-to-be-dead mother is one of the BioZenith scientists responsible for her strange abilities.

Now it's up to the Deviants to put together the last pieces of the puzzle, which includes tracking down their final missing member and forcing their parents to reveal why they mutated their own children. Emily fears the answer is far more sinister than anyone ever thought: After all, why would a parent risk a child's life unless the stakes were high—scary, world-ending high?

Tired of being at the mercy of adult conspiracies, Emily forms a plan with the other Deviants: Destroy BioZenith before anyone can use the knowledge within the facility to aid the shadowmen. But that's only if BioZenith—or something worse—doesn't capture them first. . . .

Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
Praise for VESPER: “A smart and good-humored addition to the current werewolf wave.”
Lauren Kate
Praise for VESPER: “Addictive and suprising. I couldn’t wait for night to fall to see what Emily would do next!”
VOYA - Brenna Shanks
This third installment of the Deviants series finds Emily, a genetically engineered werewolf, waging war against her creator, the sinister company BioZenith. Her "pack" has teamed up with her former enemies, telekinetic cheerleaders, to attack the BioZenith laboratories. They want answers about their creation, even if they have to confront their parents to get them. The answers they find introduce them to a new enemy, one that threatens the whole world. This new enemy stretches credulity, but readers caught up in Emily's story will not mind. To further complicate matters, Emily's dead best friend, Megan, is haunting her and seems to have suspect motives. Action comes fast and furiously and is sure to please a reader looking for a paranormal thriller. Romance is not a strong element, so paranormal romance fans might not find enough here to hold them. Emily is a strong heroine, but nothing here breaks the mold. Her most interesting internal struggles involve her reluctance to embrace her inner wolf, whose killing instincts she would rather deny, and her doubts as a leader. This is definitely best read after the previous installments. It is a good pick for large public libraries or any library where the first two novels have been successful. Reviewer: Brenna Shanks

Gr 8 Up—Emily and her cohorts are out to find some answers. Why were they genetically engineered in the first place, and how were their parents involved? Are the goals of the mysterious company Biozenith really scientific, or could they be part of some strange cult? Who are the shadowmen and do they really come from another dimension? And what's going on with Emily's friend Megan, whose odd behavior takes a sharp turn toward the alarming when she starts exhibiting supernatural powers? Narrated by Emily, Ravage continues in the engaging, chatty style of the first two novels. Though the plot gets a little manic toward the end, Sampson manages to pull the loose ends together with lots of action and not too much exposition. Although the book is billed as the conclusion to the series, the ending still leaves room open for further adventures.—Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MA
