Overview

While critics gnash their teeth and forecast the death of the classical recording industry, Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony have quietly released one first-rate recording after another for Telarc. Defying such assertions of doom and decline, they began by issuing admirable discs of Berlioz and Sibelius and progressed to even better ones of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and this latest offering, featuring music by Ravel, is no also-ran. Once again, the orchestra proves it counts among the best in the land: The Second Suite from Daphins et Chloé requires equal parts refulgent ensemble playing and adept solo work, and the Cincinnatians are up to the task in a performance that scores on both counts. "La Valse," a more extroverted creation, rings with jaunty self-confidence, while "Pavane pour une infante défunte" flows with sweet melancholy. Surprisingly, perhaps, the vibrant "Mother Goose" Suite seems the strongest performance on the program, full of color and vigor, even as "Bolero" allows the players to show their mettle in this famously tricky score. Järvi's Ravel may not erase memories of Dutoit, Karajan, and Munch, but this excellent sampler of the composer's orchestral music, in typically gleaming Telarc sound, shows yet again that he and his Cincinnatians go from strength to strength.

Editorial Reviews

Philadelphia Inquirer - David Patrick Stearns
Its latest release with Telarc confirms Cincinnati as one of the nation's great orchestras.... [The disc] makes a strong impression as sensualist.
