I enjoyed this CD immensely. The Ravel piano concerto has become my favorite piano concerto because of this recording. Krystian Zimerman opens this piece whimsically, in character. He conveys the child-like innocence of the opening melody, while turning up the heat for the more serious, passionate, almost Gershwin-like second melody. The orchestra reflects Boulez's rhythmic and musical precision and his deep knowledge of 20th Century music. The second movement is the most heart-breaking melody I have ever heard. It draws its listener into an almost unbearable sadness. Zimerman shows his sensitivity to melodies and that he can play slowly and softly just as well as loudly and powerfully. Zimerman and the orchestra show perfect alignment musically. The third finale is amazing, with its knotty melodies and harmonies and strange, but exotic, ending. The Valses are exotic and decadent, while the Left Hand Concerto is dark and knotty, but never unmusical. This one is definitely a keeper!
