Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The Irregulars are a group of street urchins who keep their eyes and ears open for Sherlock Holmes, but after Tim dies the group splits up, and some turn to crime. Archie Wiggins feels responsible for Tim's death and is ashamed to go to Holmes for help. Dooley, Tim's younger brother, has no such scruples and goes to see the famous detective. He discovers Holmes is missing and that some ruffians were carrying a long bundle wrapped in a rug, a bundle with Holmes' deerstalker cap. With careful listening and observing, Wiggins, Dooley, and two others, Jennie and Owens, learn where Holmes is being hidden and uncover a plot to bomb Queen Victoria during her Golden Jubilee celebration and parade. After collecting information, the four amateur sleuths convene and share their findings at the Raven Pub, where they decide to call themselves "The Raven League," sure to appear again in future sequels as aides to the great Sherlock Holmes. Characters genuinely care about each other and their families and do not shy away from danger or adventure. 2006, Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages 9 to 13.

Gr 4-6-This plot-driven story begins with immediate action that never lets up. Archie Wiggins is kicked out of The Baker Street Irregulars, kids who are paid eyes and ears for Sherlock Holmes, because of his culpability in the death of his friend Tim Doolan. The gang is taken over by someone working for London's criminal element. Archie ultimately makes three friends and forms the Raven League in order to help the presumably kidnapped Holmes. Together, they attempt to track the villains while trying to convince Dr. Watson that Holmes is indeed missing. A plot to assassinate Queen Victoria on Jubilee Day is uncovered. Through teamwork, faith, and courage, the children are able to save the day with the now-freed Holmes's help. The characters are fairly well developed; Victorian East End London is vividly conveyed with all of its sooty, dangerous, poverty-stricken reality; and the flavor of Arthur Conan Doyle's mysteries is successfully captured. This story will quickly grab readers' attention.-B. Allison Gray, John Jermain Library, Sag Harbor, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
