I love Patricia Briggs. Her Mercy Thompson series is one of my favorite series. But, Raven's Shadow was just ok. The plot is really good, the story is great. I think the part that I didn't care for was the writing style. This book covers a lot of time (more than 20 years). Sometimes because of this huge time span there seems to be some jumps in time. One page talks about getting married and then the next page is 20 years later. It happens quite a bit. Situations like starting a pot to boil and then it is two days later. The transitions between time are sometimes very rough and make it a little difficult to follow. But if you can get past this, the book is excellent. The plot is exciting, you want to find out more about the characters. Her portrayal of the magic in her characters is well done. It is worth reading, it is just not as good as some of her other writings.

After nine years of fighting the Shadowed, a powerful wizard and his armies, Tier is coming home. When he stays at an inn he saves the life of a Traveler, a powerful mage in a land that hates people who use magic. When they arrive at his village, he marries the mage Seraph and they start out their married life farming a piece of land nobody else would touch. They have three children all of whom have different Talents and they are relatively happy until Tier doesn¿t return home after a season of trapping............................. The leaders of the village tell her Tier is dead but when she and her children investigate the remains, they are magically able to ascertain that the burned body is not Seraph¿s husband. After fighting a priest and her brother in law who is Shadowed, she learns that her husband was taken to the Emperor¿s palace in Taela by the Secret Path, a shadow organization of second and third sons who strip the powers of the Talented and use it for their own purposes. Seraph, with the help of other Travelers intends to free her husband but when she arrives at the palace, Tier informs her they must break the power of the Secret Path in order to save the Empire from their behind the scenes rule. ............................ Patricia Briggs is a talented storyteller who enchants her audience with a spellbinding tale. The people who are shadowed are open to the Stalker, an evil entity created by the wizards of Colossae. The few wizards who survived the destruction of the city, a necessary actin needed to bind the Stalker so he won¿t destroy the human race are sent out into the world as Travelers to fight the evil entities that the Stalker leaks into the world. Saraph, who for two decades, led a normal life, realizes she must fight the Shadowed that is loose in the world in order to avoid another war. This courageous character is only one of the reason¿s Raven¿s shadow is going on this reviewer¿s keeper shelf........................... Harriet Klausner

This book is fast-paced and very well written. Patricia Briggs does not fill her books with any excess details. The characters are well drawn out. I highly recommend this book and any of her previous ones for anyone, especially if you like fantasy. One of the best authors currently writing.

I bought this because I've read (and loved) everything else Patricia Briggs has written. This book did not disappoint. I was delighted with the world she created, the unique cast of characters, and a nicely developed plot. I immediately purchased the next book, and I can't wait to read it.

I loved this book!!!! It had enough adventure and danger with characters that are well developed and loved/Hated by the reader. The characters are smart, strong and capable. They demonstrate love for each other as well as individuals in general. It moves right along and does not drag anywhere. The magic in this world takes on different forms, each person with a different ability emphasizing individuality and the need and advantage of working together. There is enough left open ended for the sequel yet comes to an adequate conclusion. I Love Patricia Briggs! Very different from the paranormal world but just as good.

This book is full of intrigue and suspense. I was interested with the descriptions of the different clans. I liked how Briggs tied the evil people into the hero's beliefs, their jealousy and need for power overwhelmed any common sense. There were quite a few characters that I had a hard time keeping track of and at points the story jumped quickly without explanation or follow-up and I felt a bit lost. All-in-all, a decent start to this series, but not my favorite of Brigg's work.

I started reading Patricia Briggs with the Mercy Thompson series and with this series have finished everything she has written. She creates a thrilling fantasy world with magic, adventure and characters you can really like in spite of their flaws.
