Overview

Raw Talent is the story of a young Hispanic man who becomes a world class golfer and the struggles he must overcome just to demonstrate that gift. It is also a tale of people, ordinary, working Mexican-Americans, most of them good and a few... not so much.

Carlos Alvarez might have been a statistic on the side of failure even with his God-given inner-strength and a friend like Pete Sanchez. For one thing, the nurturing of genius is no more complex than that of the highly-gifted athlete. It is far easier to develop either when those attributes are recognized early on, before the raw-talent has been diluted. While thirteen is a normal age for beginning golfers, Carlos had other things going on; one of them the specter of an alcoholic father. Yet Pete had recognized, in Carlos, the sparkle of pure joy and endless determination from the first day they met.

Raw Talent by Dave Ross writing as D. Kenneth Ross

This golf story will eventually rank up with Dead Solid Perfect and Golf in the Kingdom as a definitive work of golf legend for D. Kenneth Ross. It is a simple but powerful inspirational tale of a young Hispanic male who must overcome a myriad of struggles simply to demonstrate his gift for playing the sport of golf. His friend and mentor teaches him the game and the meaning of dignity and tenacity. The young man might have been a statistic on the side of failure even with his God-given inner strength and a friend like Pete Sanchez. For one thing the nurturing of genius is no more complex than that of the highly gifted athlete. It is far easier to develop either when those attributes are recognized early on, before the raw-talent has been diluted. While thirteen is a normal age for beginning golfers,Carlos had other things going on; one of them the specter of an alcoholic father. Yet Pete had recognized, in Carlos, the sparkle of pure joy and endless determination from the first day they met.
And it only gets better from there. A great read at a modest price for golfers, aspiring athletes, and anyone who enjoys reading about things that matter in this life.
