This romance anthology is filled with tales of the Old West, along with a few modern-day stories. From spirited gals mining for gold to cowboys using a gentle touch with an abused woman, you'll laugh and be moved by these characters. A lonely widow finds love, a cowboy falls for an Indian girl, a marshal must chase his bride—literally—out-of-town, a woman gifted with second sight faces ridicule, and a young kid attempts to prove himself on a horse for the girl of his dreams. There's the wounded gunslinger saved by a heavenly woman, the ranch protected by a passel of women, and a wagon train stowaway saved by the wagon master himself. In a fun turn of events, a young woman kidnaps several men to gain the attention of the town marshal, a prissy schoolmarm wins over her town marshal, a green horn faces the Yellowstone wilderness for his love, an Old West cowboy roller skates—yep, you heard that right—to win the girl of his heart, and a woman travels back in time to find her destiny and true love. This anthology has it all, and the stories are short enough that you can read one before bedtime. Many are written by well-established authors, so it's a wonderful way to sample their work. Heartwarming, romantic, and filled with to-die for heroes and spunky heroines, this collection is a delight.

Anthologies like this seem to be a win for everyone. Fans of the genre (technically I guess Western Romance is a subgenre) can pick up the book for the stories from their favorites contributors and, in the process of reading, discover other authors whose stories strike a chord. It’s a win for authors for the same reason. It’s a marketing technique that exposes them to new readers with a minimal investment, mostly in time. (Depending on the financial arrangements, it might even turn a profit.) If you’re a Western Romance reader, I think you’ll find more than your money’s worth here. While I thought some stories were better than others, none were bad. Chances are you’ll feel the same, even if your choices of which stories are best turn out different than mine. You should be able to find authors whose writing style, characterization, and story lines are to your taste. The only concern I have with this collection is a weakness inherent in what is being attempted. A short story has to be limited in scope, for obvious reasons, yet a romance requires a story arc that goes from the hero and heroine meeting to an apparent happily-ever-after ending. That’s hard to do in an average of two or three thousand words and in some of the stories that relationship arc felt like it culminated way too fast. However, as a collection of quick reads and a low risk way for readers to try new authors, Rawhide ‘n Roses still fits the bill. **Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. Western Romance Anthology! Fifteen stories from fifteen authors. Everything from western historical to western comedy, but all with lots of sparking romance. Doesn't get any better then that. Having such a variety of stories to read, you get to see the fifteen different styles of writing. From the Much Ado about Misfires by Jacquie Rogers and Bluffing the Marshall, by Paty Jager, who both made you laugh, to western romance about a young city lawyer, who traveled into the wilderness to find the woman he loved, in Yellowstone Proposal, by Peggy Henderson. Don't miss When Love Arrives by Carol Spalding either. There are so many more great stories. This book has something for everyone. If you like western and romance, then there is something here for you.
