Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Parents and educators looking for a funny, intelligent book about pre-teen boys need look no further. The author, Mike Knudson, has proved that it is possible to write a realistic, humorous boys' book without gratuitous dumb jokes or silly situations. When best friends Raymond and Graham go off to "Camp Grizzly" for the summer, they try to be the coolest kids in camp. Their plans run into problems, however, when they are paired with two decidedly non-cool roommates: BB, a little guy who loves bugs, and Tiny, a big fellow with a gentle heart. Their popularity quotient takes yet another hit with they are assigned to a camp counselor nicknamed "Toad" and a patrol called the "Toad Claws." After a series of pranks and adventures, however, the boys find that being friends with BB and Tiny is more fun than trying to be popular. This book portrays strong family values. Loving parent-child relationships are the norm, not the exception. There is a particularly nice touch when Toad encourages all the kids to share "a rose, a thorn, and a bud" with one another around the campfire every night. Each kid talks about something that they have enjoyed that day (the rose), something that didn't go so well (the thorn), and something that they are looking forward to tomorrow (the bud). This book, the fourth in the "Raymond & Graham" series, will inspire readers to seek out more adventures of these two best friends. Reviewer: Leona Illig
