School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- The summer between first and second grade promises nothing special for Raymond, whom readers first met in Dinosaurs Are 568 (Greenwillow, 1988). However, he soon finds out that there are surprises in store for him. First, he distinguishes himself in his swimming class, and then he is the key witness whose testimony leads to the capture of a ring of house thieves. The third surprise is an unexpected invitation to visit his grandmother in California, where he revels in a whale exhibit. All in all, his summer is a big success. Each chapter begins with a half-page black-and-white illustration. Raymond's character is well developed in this short novel, and readers will share his worries, admire his determination, and cheer his moments of triumph. Clearly marked chapters; wide margins; and double-spaced, large-print, easy text make this an ideal choice for children whose reading level and attention span reach beyond the picture-book stage. --Laura Culberg, Chicago Public Library Cultural Center
