Overview

Boiling down a catalogue as rich as Dolly Parton's -- she has more than 3,000 songs copyrighted -- to a representative 16-song overview is no mean feat, but this single-disc collection is pretty tough stuff. This set includes some of her best-known songs -- "Joshua," "Jolene," her definitive version of "I Will Always Love You," "Love Is Like a Butterfly," "The Bargain Store," "Here You Come Again," and the movie theme "9 to 5" -- and its emphasis on album cuts and tunes that only hit the country charts whets the appetite for more. "False Eyelashes," from her first RCA sessions in 1967, offers an early indication of Dolly's penchant for unsparing self-examination, even though it's one of the few songs here that are not Parton originals. The catchy, raw "Daddy's Moonshine Still," from 1971, is a bitter condemnation of the "living hell" a bootlegging father put his poverty-stricken family through. Most noteworthy are two cuts from the long-out-of-print 1976 gem All I Can Do, the last album Parton made before going Hollywood and entering an artistic decline from which she didn't fully emerge until 1998's Hungry Again: the album's alluring, joyful title track and "Shattered Image," a pointed retort to everyone who ever gained currency from mocking her appearance. This is compelling artistry, from first cut to last, by a woman with a gift for storytelling, deep country roots, and a voice for the ages.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - John Bush
Dolly Parton's volume in the RCA Country Legends series attempts to survey territory previously covered by two volumes of The Essential Dolly Parton series, still the best retrospective of her period as a Nashville and (later) American icon. This collection has only 16 tracks, but still stretches all the way from her earthy late-'60s material to the heavily pop-slanted hits of the early '80s. Fans of her early recordings will enjoy hearing a pair of early album tracks (1967's "False Eyelashes" and 1969's "Evening Shade"), but will surely wonder why the volume bypassed not only all of her charting singles from the '60s, but one of her signature songs, "Coat of Many Colors." Those who know her best for pop performances will find a handful of hits, but not nearly enough to love. At best, RCA Country Legends does function as a competent hits collection; it includes plenty of country number ones ("Joshua," "The Bargain Store," "Jolene") as well as most of her pop crossovers of the late '70s and early '80s ("I Will Always Love You," "9 to 5," "Here You Come Again").
