Overview

Those attracted to Jacky Terrasson's work are interested in two things: delicacy and dynamics. The pianist's second Blue Note record assured that the vast acclaim for his debut was right on target. In typical Terrasson fashion, REACH goes from animated to wistful in just a few bars. Taking cues from Ahmad Jamal and Keith Jarrett, the leader guides his trio through an ever-shifting music that's sometimes sheer, sometimes opaque. Moving as one, drummer Leon Parker and bassist Ugonna Okegwo balance each new variation, even though there are moments when they bring the action down to such an ebb it's unclear whether or not they're still playing. Such playful deception seems radical in a style that often loves to beat its chest, and ultimately it creates an odd atmosphere of fantasia. The pianist's riffs in "Reach/Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" ultimately becomes rhapsodic. Somewhere along the line, Terrasson makes us privy to the value of every single note.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
The talented young pianist Jacky Terrasson and his trio (with bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Leon Parker) find something new to say on a few standards (including a rare up-tempo version of "For Sentimental Reasons") and introduce five of Terrasson's originals. Although he has does not have an original style yet, Terrasson displays a great deal of potential for the future. Highlights include "I Should Care," "Just One of Those Things," and a medley of his "Reach" with "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."
