Inspirataional and Informative "How To" Book

As a music educator, playwright, actor, director and minister, I was impressed with the wealth of information and inspiration that Dr. Wallace has included in his book. It's easy to find inspirational books related to the arts, laden with theory and visions, but "Reaching Out" takes the reader by the hand and says, "If you want to do an interactive performance, here's how." The steps and process are laid out as clearly as a Betty Crocker recipe, but I never get the feeling that David Wallace is saying, "This is the only way and don't try to mess with my formula." He's not trying to create a David Wallace cult that must adhere to the party line, but rather sharing what has worked and worked well for him. I've seen "Doc Wallace" perform in a variety of venues and was always as entertained and informed by his comments and interaction with the audience as I was deeply moved by the music he spins out on his instruments. Any teacher, performer or public speaker, of any ilk, could profit from the clear vision and direction provided by Dr. Wallace in "Reaching Out."

This Book is the Future of Music Education!

I am a musician who has conducted high school orchestra as well as played in professional ensembles, chamber groups, and jazz bands. The reality is that musicians like me really have to work and compete in order to build an audience and a following. This book has enabled me to communicate on a level that goes beyond anything I had ever tried before. I now can get people excited about whatever music my groups are performing, and they keep coming back. There are so many useful strategies and ideas for engaging an audience. The appendix has five concert scripts, each of which has ideas you can adapt to your own music. Two thumbs up!

The best book of its kind!

There are many good books on music education, but few that apply to performers. This book really gives artists and music teachers alike a solid grounding in how to communicate the joy of music with an audience or students of all ages. I grew up on the Leonard Bernstein Young People's Concerts and loved them. Thanks to this book, I'm able to create the same kinds of engaging, educational, and enlightening musical events. Every musician and teacher should own a copy. Bravo!

    Perfect!

I've been doing outreach concerts for years, but this book totally changed my perspective. There are many useful hints and it's practical and well-organized. Very entertaining, too.
