Meet the Author

Robert A. Moss is the Louis P. Hammett Professor ofChemistry at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, NewBrunswick, NJ. He received his Ph. D. with Professor Gerhard Closs(Chicago) and was a postdoctoral student with Professor RonaldBreslow (Columbia). Dr. Moss has been an A.P. Sloan FoundationFellow, and a visiting professor or scientist at M.I.T., theUniversity of Oxford, the Politechnika (Warsaw), the WeizmannInstitute, the National Research Council of Canada, and the HebrewUniversity of Jerusalem. He has more than 350 scientificpublications in the areas of reactive intermediates and chemistryin molecular aggregates.

Matthew S. Platz was born in New York City and graduatedfrom the State University of NY at Albany ( B.Sc. in Chemistry andMathematics) in 1973 and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry studyingwith Professor Jerome Berson in 1976. After a postdoctoral stintwith Professor Gerhard Closs, Platz joined the faculty of The OhioState University in 1978 where he has spent his entire independentcareer. Platz served as chair of the OSU Chemistry Department from1994-1999, was the Melvin S. Newman Professor (1994-2001), and wasnamed Distinguished University Professor in 2001. Platz has been aSloan Fellow, a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, and aCope Scholar of the American Chemical Society. He has over 200scientific publications and holds over a dozen patents.

Maitland Jones, Jr. turned to chemistry only after theinvention of the curveball by his peers made it clear that he wouldnever be a major league centerfielder. He received his B.S. degreefrom Yale College and his M. S. and Ph. D. degrees from YaleUniversity, where he studied with William von E. Doering. After apostdoctoral year with Jerry Berson at Wisconsin he came toPrinceton in 1964 as an Instructor. He has been there ever since,and is now David B. Jones Professor of Chemistry. He has been avisiting professor at Columbia and Harvard in this country, as wellas at the Vrije Universiteit in Holland, the Kiev Polytechnic inUkraine, and Fudan University in the People's Republic of China. Herecently spent three months in Basel as the Freiwillige AkademischeGesellschaft Professor. He and his wife, the artist Susan Hockaday,were comasters of Stevenson Hall, one of Princeton's undergraduatecolleges, for several years. Together with the members of hisresearch group, he has published more than 200 papers centered onthe chemistry of reactive intermediates, as well as a recenttextbook on organic chemistry.
