Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
Not a biography, this is instead a book that explains who Rodriguez is and what he does. The text is written with two or three simple sentences on one page and a color photo on the other. Beginning with his birthday in 1975 in New York City, the text covers the skills and abilities that make Rodriguez a prominent ball player. The book ends with the 2009 World Series and a close-up of Rodriguez' 2009 World Series ring. There is a list of vocabulary words to begin the book and the official website is given at the end of the book with an index. The twenty-four page book can be used with young readers and with those who need high interest/low ability texts. The pictures will hold attention and the details of playing baseball—covering the base, hitting the ball and running the bases—will be familiar to sports fans. The book is part of the "I Like Sports Stars!" series and will be appropriate in classroom and school libraries. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
