School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Simple texts and good photographs are the highlights of these biographies. Similar in reading level to David A. Adler's "Picture Book Biographies" (Holiday House), they offer more facts. Feinstein explains that as a young girl, Earhart observed barnstormers in Kansas and that during World War I she cared for wounded pilots in Canada. The second title describes the hardships that Oakley, her mother, and six siblings endured following the death of her father, and the road that led to her participation in Bill Cody's rodeo. Geronimo gives background on the Apache lifestyle and the tribe's relations with Mexico. Geronimo's anger at Mexicans and white settlers is explained without bias. Each title defines a few words in the front of the book and has a time line. The photos show the subjects in a variety of situations, bringing them to life, and the captions are clear and informative.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
