Each abbreviated selection is placed within the context of the original work from which it is taken (an introductory paragraph concisely describes Alice’s unusual day, followed by Chapter Seven of Alice in Wonderland, in which she joins the Mad Tea-Party). Reproductions of original illustrations (Tenniel’s for Alice, Williams’s for Charlotte’s Web) are included for several of the excerpts. The brief fragments provide a general impression of and introduction to these favorite works, and may spur families to seek out the full tales to read.
