Overview

Team sports like football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer. Individual athletic pursuits, such as skating, gymnastics, track, BMX, and skateboarding. These are the activities that hold a powerful and universal appeal for kids.

Read and Write Sports: Readers Theatre and Writing Activities for Grades 3–8 makes students forget they're learning by delivering the action and emotion of their favorite pursuits as they participate in readers theatre activities and writing exercises such as composing an action-reaction poem for each sport. These activities allow students to draw from their personal experience and bring their extracurricular activities into the classroom by writing a narrative scene for different sports throughout the school year. Each chapter provides "filled-out" examples to model the pre-writing process, making it easy for students to see how others think before they write.

Suen uses children's interest in athletics to help generate ideas for writing. Popular sports like basketball, football, and baseball are highlighted as well as skating, track, and gymnastics. The book includes sports-themed word searches, crossword puzzles, and graphic organizers, or "writing maps," as Suen calls them. The latter generate material for poetry, nonfiction writing, and fictional snapshots about specific sport. A simple readers theatre piece depicts an exciting moment in a game and includes suggested reading levels for each part. The activities outlined in the book are helpful for writers who need structured support to help guide them, and the lesson plans are clearly laid out. The majority of the book consists of the graphic organizers with only a small portion devoted to explaining how to implement the activities.—Kari Allen, National Writing Project, Plymouth State University, NH
