More for teachers than for students, the book includes discussion topics (most without answers), quizzes (with answers), learning objectives for 9 units, and links to websites for further exploration. I think this book is an excellent gift to teachers and homeschoolers for Bilbo's birthday this weekend.

I got this because the series is one of my favorites of all time, and because it was free. I hoped it would give some background and insight for my umpteenth reading of the series. It did not deliver on either, being more a Q&A guide for classroom teachers, and delivering little insight into Tolkien, Middle-Earth, the poetry, or the many literary devices used.

Maybe 3.5 stars. As the title states, this is a series of lesson plans for readers and teachers of Tolkien's most famous classics. It delivers the goods, including sufficient supplemental and expansionary literature to help even the most well-read Tolkien fan gain from the experience.
The tone is didactic, and I don't agree with all--in fact, I strongly disagree with some--of the conclusions, but the scholarship is sound.
A good read.
