Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Caitlin Augusta
Educators need multicultural literature guides, but should use caution choosing this uneven series geared toward high school and college students. Angel's discussion of Mango Street is problematic. She properly identifies the novel as one of the first works to explore Latino identity in American literature, but structure and content problems hamper her endeavors. Angel first describes Cisneros's childhood in America, but she includes no dates or events to show the culture that influenced Cisneros's writing. The text wavers from workmanlike to downright awkward. Despite an acceptable account of Cisneros' life and work, and major elements from Mango Street, readers should eschew this title in favor of clear prose. Reviewer: Caitlin Augusta
Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of four in a multicultural series, this edition focuses on the semi-biographical, coming-of-age classic for young readers that has realized an even wider appeal to other age groups. The reader's guide enriches the reading of the book by explaining the cultural background of Cisneros, how the author began her writing career, her writing goals, and the structures she uses to tell her stories. The book discusses in detail the themes, poetic devices, and other strategies used by Ms. Cisneros in The House on Mango Street. The heroine of the book, Esperanza, a young Chicano girl, relates her experiences growing up in a world of mixed cultures and the effect of this world on her search for "identity and place." The guide helps teachers and readers understand the universal theme of finding one's self without rejecting one's culture through exploring the author's background and her reaction to it. A discussion about the importance of this work as well as some of her others is included to give a more complex view of the author. It might be helpful to readers who may come from an entirely different background but realize the commonality of the struggle to grow up. The book includes a chronology of the author, a glossary, an index, and a list of resources for further study. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
