Well-written, very informative and easy to understand!

It has been said that the Bible is the foundation of Western and Middle Eastern civilization, but did you know that three-fourths of the Bible consists of the Old Testament? If you have never read through the Old Testament and desire to educate yourself, Reading and Understanding the Old Testament: The Foundation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is the book for you.

Dr Lane's book begins with Genesis chapter one and takes the reader chapter by chapter and book by book right through the complete Old Testament explaining the meaning of the content and applying it to both ancient and modern times. The book is very thorough, simply written, and ideal for those with limited or no background in the Old Testament.

The book is also written to enable one to begin understanding the religious and theological foundation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, for all three religions are rooted in and define their God from the Old Testament Scriptures. It is important to know that all three religions believe the Old Testament is God's inspired word to his people. Therefore the author describes and explains the Old Testament from that viewpoint.

As stated the author's approach is basically religious and theological for the overall purpose is to seek the plain meaning of Scripture based upon the Scripture writer's intent and purpose. Along with this, Reading and Understanding the Old Testament: The Foundation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is still based upon modern scholarship. The book is unique in that rather than burdening the beginning reader with the intricacies of modern scholarship, the author applies scholarship in a practical manner. Therefore the reader can easily visualize how scholarship works with the actual Biblical content.

As the author moves the reader through the verses, chapters, and books of the Old Testament, the exact verses containing the content discussed are stated. This is done to enable the reader to experience and get a sense of the actual Scriptures. There is no better way to learn about the Old Testament than to read the verses in their actual context. The way this book is presented is exactly how the author has presented the Old Testament content to both beginning and more advanced learners in the university, church school, and private study groups. The manner in which the content was explained in those settings is part of the structure of this book.

If one desires to purchase this excellent book, the author encourages all to first read the Introduction, for it includes necessary information concerning Jewish, Christian, and Muslim understandings of the Old Testament, as well as the manner they approach their understanding of the Old Testament. This then continues into the book of Genesis and throughout the book. No one will be disappointed in purchasing this book, and one's knowledge and understanding of the three religions, as well as the book that is the foundation of Western and Middle Eastern civilization, will be greatly enhanced.
