Complex definitions and theory are followed by pointed, witty, personal examples from the author, creating a text appearing far less academic than actually written. Chapters succinctly discuss viewing and teaching literacy and reading, with a crucial statement of reading being more than novels: It is the Internet, e-mail, comics, text-messaging, and more, with the epilogue's 101 Literacy Events providing classroom practices. An overall premise for encouraging and expanding reading and literacy is to have teachers and students reading relevant texts, writing real thoughts, and sharing authentic feelings while valuing the learning involved in doing so. Readers knowledgeable of best practices yet finding them compromised by heightened assessment and other demands will gobble this text, thrilled by its validation. Booth discusses common practices such as skill and drill, spelling tests, worksheets, separating reading and writing, classics only, teacher-directed interpretation and critique, book reports, and more-and then skewers them by showing their ineffectiveness regarding literacy. Thoughtful and pithy statements include, "Do you really want a ten-year-old boy to have the same literary tastes as a forty-year-old divorced teacher?" when considering ill-fitting novel choices. Booth provocatively asks, "What role does school play in determining the roles that books will hold in young people's lives? Any?"
