I became interested in Chineses my sophmore year of college, and it was this book, that completely unlocked the seemingly endless confusion associated with understanding written Chinese. The author does an incredible job explaining the concepts behind each character, essentially showing what the picture is and why.

This book describes each character: origins, how to write it, how to pronounce it, and of course what it means. All-in-all the book covers around 2000 characters and even more words. I am currently studying through it, learning each character one-by-one, in addition to my regular textbook-studies.
