From The CriticsReviewer: Charlene A. Winters, MS, RN, CS,CCRN(Montana State University)
Description: The second edition critical care handbook updates the information on medications, technology, and nursing methods used in the delivery of critical care that was first outlined in the 1993 text.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a ready reference on select topics common to the critically ill adult. No information is included for pediatric or pregnant patients.
Audience: Although not stated by the authors, the book is written for critical care nurses and nursing students who have prior knowledge of pathophysiology, physical assessment, and critical care nursing techniques.
Features: The small size of the book makes it ideal for use in a crowded unit. The detailed contents page found at the beginning of the book would be easier to use if it were alphabetized. Easy to use illustrations, updated from the previous edition, are used throughout the text. References for the illustrations cited in the text are current, although the bibliography lists several references that are more than 10 years old.
Assessment: This book is intended as an updated reference for critical care nurses and nursing students with prior knowledge of pathology, physical assessment, and critical care nursing techniques. The outdated bibliographic list and omission of some essential content makes the usefulness of this book questionable.
