Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The first assignment to write a research paper can be daunting, but Terban has written a very easy-to-understand guide that should help everyone from the beginning to the sophisticated researcher. It starts out with the most important task, planning the project—or, as Terban calls it, budgeting your work time. He really encourages kids to be realistic about taking into account outside activities and family time. The hard part for most students will be to follow the schedule that they lay out. The second most difficult task is deciding what your focus or topic is going to be. Once those two things are decided, then the work gets underway. I was delighted to see how much emphasis was placed on going to the library and getting assistance from the professionals there, as well as on hunting for resource material. Turban explains how to take notes and how to prepare proper citations. He also offers suggestions and reminders about checking back with the teacher who made the assignment to determine the type of citations required. He explains how to avoid plagiarism and how to use sources such as the Internet, films, actual interviews, and the like. One step that students often overlook is re-reading the paper prior to turning it in. From personal experience, I know how many errors can slip by when you don't take this extra step. This paperback text is inexpensive and belongs on every student's desk at home, in their locker at school or in their backpack. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
